Message actually, at least not in a while, and I agree with your take on where one builds their house.

But the weather here isn't THAT bad, and we have no big recurring natural disasters. Winter weather can get down to the 20s and occasionally below, but that's pretty rare, and mostly it's in the 30s. No major tornadoes; occasional small ones from storms. Too far inland for hurricanes to really do damage except for flooding, and I've never lived in a house that was located in a danger zone for that. So really, my environmental experience here hasn't been bad. Just not the "heaven" I hear CA is.
